Mexico detains over 400 people for migrant smuggling in past 6 months

Mexican authorities have apprehended more than 400 individuals for crimes related to migrant smuggling, the Mexican Embassy in the United States said in a statement on Monday.

"From December 2018 to May 2019, Mexico has detained more than 400 individuals for criminal acts related to migrant smuggling," the statement, published on the Mexican Embassy's Twitter account, read.

The statement also noted that over the same period Mexico had rescued more than 80,000 people and returned them to their countries of origin, mainly to North and Central America.

"The Government of #Mexico complies with its migration laws and reiterates its commitment to continue the dialogue and cooperation it has always engaged with US authorities in order to address migration issues," the embassy said.

An increasing number of migrants from Central America have been arriving to the US border with Mexico in recent months. US President Donald Trump has called the surge of arrivals a crisis and declared a national emergency in February to secure funds to build a border wall.

Last week, Trump said the United States would impose a 5 percent tariff on all goods imported from Mexico beginning on June 10. The tariff will increase to 25 percent by October unless Mexico acts to curb the illegal immigration crisis.
