Almost 40 migrants detained after crossing English Channel

The Home Office says the individuals, who claimed to be Iranian and Iraqi nationals, were medically assessed then questioned.

Almost 40 migrants have been detained by border officials after they crossed the English Channel.

Twenty people were found in the first incident on Saturday in the Dungeness area of Kent after a small boat arrived nearby.

A Home Office spokesman said the individuals, who claimed to be Iranian and Iraqi nationals, were medically assessed and then transferred to immigration officials to be interviewed.

A Border Force cutter intercepted another small boat on Saturday that was carrying 11 men, who also said they were from Iran and Iraq.

They have been taken to Dover to be transferred to immigration officials for interview.

Another three adults and three children, also claiming to be Iranian and Iraqi, were found by police in Sussex after arriving in a small boat.

The children were taken into the care of social services and the adults handed over to immigration officials to be interviewed.

A Home Office spokesman said: "Anyone crossing the Channel in a small boat is taking a huge risk with their life and the lives of their children.

"Since December, two cutters have returned to UK waters from overseas operations, we have agreed a joint action plan with France and increased activity out of the Joint Coordination and Information Centre in Calais.

"It is an established principle that those in need of protection should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach and since January more than 50 people who arrived illegally in the UK on small boats have been returned to Europe."

In July, more than 40 suspected illegal immigrants were detained by border officials in Kent in the space of two days after crossing the English Channel.
