66 refugees transferred from Libya to Rwanda

UNHCR's Grandi calls it 'great example of African solidarity'

The first group of 66 African refugees and asylum seekers who had been blocked in Libya arrived on Friday in Rwanda through an agreement signed between the African Union and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi.

"I want to thank President Paul Kagame, the people of Rwanda, and the government for having given hope and stability to desperate people, a great example of African solidarity," Grandi said.

Based on the agreement, the government of Kigali said it is ready to accommodate up to 30,000 African refugees.
