Malaysia repatriates 391 Myanmar migrants

Malaysia repatriated 391 irregular Myanmar migrants after they finished serving jail sentences in Kuala Lumpur, Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The migrants arrived in Yangon on May 11 aboard two Malaysian Airlines flights.

The Myanmar embassy in Kuala Lumpur confirmed their citizenship before they departed.

Their home states and regions would transport them and hold them in quarantine facilities for 21 days.

The International Organization for Migration said the number of documented foreign workers in Malaysia increased from 1.7 million to 2.2 million from 2010 to 2017.

At the end of 2018, there were 2 to 4 million additional undocumented migrant workers in Malaysia. Major countries of origin included Indonesia, Nepal, Bangladesh, India and Myanmar.

Aid groups said there are an estimated 500,000 documented and irregular Myanmar migrant workers in Malaysia.
