About 4.9 million EU nationals have applied for UK Settlement Scheme

The United Kingdom’s authorities have urged the European citizens to apply for the European Union Settlement Scheme, while stressing that up to December 31, 2020, about 4.9 persons filed an application for the Scheme.

The European Union Settlement Scheme gives all EU, EEA and Switzerland citizens the chance to continue to live in the United Kingdom’s territory, even though the UK is officially outside of the European Union, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The UK’s Home Office statement has recalled that the deadline to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme is June 30, 2021.

Based on the recent statistics published yesterday (January 21, 2021) up to December 31, 2020, about 4.9 persons filed an application for the EU Settlement Scheme, in order to be permitted to live in Britain post-Brexit.

“This includes more than 4.4 million applications from England, 243,600 from Scotland, 80,700 from Wales and 78,500 from Northern Ireland up to December 31 2020. In December alone there were 402,300 new applications to the scheme as people applied before the end of the transition period,” the statement of the UK’s government reads.

The Minister for Future Borders and Immigration Kevin Foster considers that reaching about 4.9 million applications to the scheme is terrific news. He also encouraged all persons to apply the system as there are less than six months left before the deadline so that citizens can secure their rights under Britain’s law.

“A wide range of support is available online and over the telephone, if you need it and we are funding 72 organizations across the UK to ensure no one gets left behind,” Foster pointed out.

On March 30, 2019, the United Kingdom authorities launched the EU Settlement Scheme, processing more than 20,000 applications per day.

In October 2019, the country registered the highest number of applications processed, more than 400,000 applications processed within a month.

Over four million persons applied for the EU Settlement Scheme until October 2020, according to a previous report of the SchengenVisaInfo.com. The figures published in October showed that the milestone was reached before the deadline.
