Germany admitted 2,060 refugees from Greek camps since April 2020

On Wednesday, March 3, a flight from Greece landed in Hanover with 106 refugees. Among the refugees, there were 50 adults and 56 minors from 26 families in total. All of the individuals were part of the group that has been entitled to protection by the Greek government.

This leads to the total number of refugees admitted by Germany from Greece to 2,060 since April 2020, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Based on the Federal Government’s plan in cooperation with the governments of all 16 federal states, the refugees will be relocated to different federal states.

The families will be admitted by the federal states of Berlin, Hamburg, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, Schleswig-Holstein and Saxony.

On March 3, 2021, the Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer decided to admit 243 children in need of medical assistance, their close family members, and 53 unattended children from Greece in the course of a European aid effort after an agreement inside the Federal Government and a decision by the coalition committee at the meeting that was held on March 8, 2020.

The procedure to bring the children and their families to Germany has been finalized.

Furthermore, the Federal Government decided to admit two other groups of refugees, except for the 243 children that needed medical assistance and their families.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community informed that Germany admitted 150 unaccompanied children from the camp who needed shelter after the fires that took place at the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos.

Except for the unattended children, on the same date, Germany decided to admit 1,553 family members from the Greek islands entitled to protection by the Greek government.

Germany has been actively admitting refugees. On February 18, the number of admitted refugees was 1,677, and by March 3, it raised to 2,060.

Prior to that, on February 25, 2021, Germany admitted 155 refugees, made up of 70 adults and 85 minors. On February 18, 2021, they admitted 116 refugees, made up of 53 adults and 63 minors. And earlier on February 3, 2021, Germany admitted 42 refugees, comprising 23 adults and 19 minors.

Earlier this month, Germany’s Minister of Interior Horst Seehofer proposed registering all data correlating to internationals remaining in the country’s Central Register of Foreign Nationals.

Additionally, on February 24, Germany’s government approved a draft law from the country’s Interior Ministry that would allow the federal government and 16 federal states to have access to relevant documents through the Central Register of Foreign Nationals.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior revealed in a press release that the number of first-time asylum applications dropped significantly in 2020. In the same year, 76,061 people applied for asylum in Germany for the first time, representing a drop of 31,5 per cent compared to 2019.

Moreover, 26,520 first-time asylum applications were submitted for children who were born in Germany, and 19,589 follow up applications, bringing the total to 11,567 applications.
