Croatia received over 35,912 immigrants in 2021

The Republic of Croatia registered a total of 35,912 immigrants in 2021, while 40,424 people emigrated from it, according to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics.

The same source also revealed that the country had a negative net migration with foreign countries, which reached -4,512, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

“In 2021, a total of 29.6 per cent of Croatian citizens and 70.4 per cent of aliens immigrated into the Republic of Croatia, while 64.2 per cent of Croatian citizens and 35.8 per cent of aliens emigrated abroad,” the report reads.

Such data also show that, regarding the total number of immigrants and emigrants, a significant part of foreigners received residence and work permits.

Of the total number of immigrants, about 22.4 per cent of people came from Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the other hand, of the total number of immigrants from Croatia, 32.3 per cent of people immigrated to Germany.

The figures also revealed that as for the total number of immigrants, men dominated with 72.7 percent. At the same time, out of the total number of emigrants, there were more men with 63.5 percent. In addition, the largest number of people who emigrated abroad were aged 20-39 with 45.9 per cent.

The cities of Croatia to which most people emigrated in 2021 were registered in the city of Zagreb with 23.4 per cent and in the County of Split-Dalmatia with 10.0 per cent.

According to statistics, about 71,864 people in the Republic of Croatia will change their residence in 2021. Meanwhile, the largest number of people who migrated to the Republic of Croatia were aged 20 – 39 years, with about 45.9 per cent. In contrast, the percentage of women in the total number of people who migrated was 54.6 per cent.

“Within the total number of persons who migrated on the territory of the Republic of Croatia in 2021, the largest number of persons (40.5 per cent) migrated between counties, 38.5 per cent of persons migrated between towns/municipalities of the same county, and 21.0 per cent of persons migrated between settlements of the same town/municipality,” the statement of Croatian Bureau of Statistics reads.

Out of a total of twenty counties and the city of Zagreb, seven of these countries had a positive net inter-county migration, and the highest was recorded in Zagreb County, with 1,904 people. Compared to other thirty-three counties and the city of Zagreb, there was a negative net migration between counties, the largest being recorded in Slavonski Brod-Posavina County with -447 people and Vukovar-Sirmium County with -395 people.

Moreover, in 2021, the population’s largest positive total net migration was recorded in Zagreb County with 1,746 people. On the other hand, regarding the total net migration of the population, the largest negative population was recorded in Slavonski Brod-Posavina County with -1,268 people, Vukovar-Sirmium County with -1,261 people, and Osijek-Baranja County with -1,222 people.
