EU countries received over 89,000 first-time asylum applications in September

A total of 89,590 first-time applications filed for asylum by citizens from non-EU countries have been registered in European Union Member States, in September this year.

Such figures have been provided by the European Office for Statistics, Eurostat, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The number of applications received by authorities in EU countries for international protection in September is more by 11,995 compared to August figures, or an increase of 15 per cent.

In comparison to September last year’s figures, during which month a total of 62,820 asylum applications were received, there was marked an increase of 43 per cent in September this year.

“A similar increase was also registered in the number of subsequent applicants (people who reapplied for asylum after a decision had been taken on a previous application). In September 2022, there were 6 445 subsequent applicants, 345 people more than in August 2022, an increase of 6 per cent. Compared with September 2021 there was a 36 per cent drop,” the statement notes.

According to the recent report provided by Eurostat, the majority of applications filed for international protection in EU countries came from citizens of Syria, or a total of 14,930 first-time applications, followed by those made by Afghans (11,955), Turks (5,220), Indians (4,530) as well as those from Venezuela (4,520).

An increase in the number of applications in September this year was also noted by citizens of Ukraine, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In February there were registered 2,370 applications, in March 12,890 while in August and September marked a notable decrease or more specifically 1,510, and 870.

Eurostat’s figures revealed that in September the number of Russian citizens who applied for international protection in the EU accounted for the top 15 citizenships, with a total of 1,305 applications registered.

Germany received the highest number of first-time applications for asylum made in EU countries, since the beginning of this country. It has been reported that in September this year, authorities in Germany received 18,715 first-time applications, accounting for 21 per cent of the total.

In addition to Germany, the following EU countries received the highest number of asylum applications:

  • Austria (15 490, 17 per cent)
  • France (13 500, 15 per cent)
  • Spain (11 000, 12 per cent)
  • Italy (7 920, 9 per cent)

“These five Member States together accounted for three-quarters (74 per cent) of all first-time asylum applicants in the EU,” the statement provided by Eurostat reads.

According to Eurostat, in comparison to each EU country, the highest rate of recorded first-time applicants in September this year was registered in Austria, or a total of 1,725 applicants per million population, followed by Cyprus, (1,714), Croatia (475) and Luxembourg (466). On the other hand, Hungary registered the lowest rate.

As for unaccompanied minors, in September there were registered a total of 4,795 unaccompanied minors in September this year were from Austria (2,070), Germany (535), as well as Belgium and Netherlands.
