118,000 IDPs arrived in Kurdistan Region since Mosul operation

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Saturday announced the influx of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) toward the Kurdistan Region from Mosul continued as fighting intensified in the western side of the city.

In a statement, the KRG’s Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC) revealed the flood of displaced people from Mosul to the Region was on the rise reaching nearly 118,000 people

The JCC statement added that despite the liberation of the eastern part of Mosul, IDPs continued arriving in the Kurdistan Region on a daily basis.

The report mentioned that “on average, every day, over 500 people reach Peshmerga front lines.”

“The number of IDPs arrivals are expected to increase once military operations launch in the residential areas,” the JCC statement read.

“New IDPs influxes are predicted to flee into the Kurdistan Region due to a lack of settlements, services, and insecurity in the camps located in western Mosul,” the report continued.

Additionally, the JCC announced in the past few days 7,000 IDPs had arrived in Erbil from western Mosul.

“Out of the total IDPs in Kurdistan, only 44,000 individuals returned to their place of origin,” the JCC statement revealed.

The JCC mentioned several displaced people have not returned due to the deterioration of the security situation in Mosul.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated the total number of civilians displaced from Mosul had risen sharply over the past days and exceeded 200,000 on Sunday, Reuters reported.

The offensive to retake the western side of Mosul from Islamic State extremists has resulted in the displacement of over 45,000 civilians.
