The number of new asylums seekers registered in Germany has fallen significantly in February, official figures published on Monday by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) show.
According to the BAMF report, new arrivals of refugees in Germany fell by 23 percent in February compared to the same month last year, and by 10.4 percent compared to January 2018. The largest numbers of new arrivals were Syrian nationals (2,219), followed by Iraqis (1,052) and Nigerians (799).
In total, 11,007 individuals were registered as asylum seekers for the first time in February. And 12,490 formal applications for asylum were filed in February, taking the total figure in Germany since the start of year to 30,570 applications.
The number of outstanding asylum cases also fell dramatically again in February to 55,279, compared to more than 333,815 outstanding cases during the same month last year.
The figures published on Monday consequently reflect a longer-standing trend which has seen a substantial easing of the logistical burden of registering and providing care for asylum seekers shouldered by Berlin since the peak of the "refugee crisis" in 2015.
