Human trafficking in Dubai drops by 57%

Dubai witnessed a 57 per cent decline in human tracking crimes in 2017 compared to 2016, revealed the Dubai Police Human Trafficking Crimes Monitoring Centre on Friday.

The centre recorded 4 complaints about 9 victims against 15 accused in 2017. In the last three years, women remained the prime trafficking victims, with 18 cases compared to 14 in the children category.

The crime of sexual exploitation came at the top of all forms of exploitation in the complaints filed at the Human Trafficking Crimes Monitoring Centre, with 19 incidents during the past three years.

Last year the Department for the Protection of Children and Women dealt with 73 child abuse cases, 17 per cent of which was educational neglect; making parents a primary source of abuse suffered by children.

Meanwhile, the Department’s Women’s Protection Section provided support and assistance in handling 40 Woman Abuse cases during 2017. Neglect accounted for 40 per cent of forms of abuse against the victims.

The statistics were revealed during an inspection tour that the Dubai Police Commander-in-Chief Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri made to the police force’s General Directorate of Human Rights. He stressed that attention to human rights and quick and flexible handling of all issues affecting the security, safety and stability of members of society is one of the strategic goals set by the General Command.

Al Marri listened to a detailed explanation of services provided at the Child Protection Oasis, including the ‘Rights and Responsibilities’ program, which aims to educate children about the security culture concepts and basics.

He urged for more coordination with the Dubai Police Positivity and Happiness Council in organising trips for students to the Child Protection Oasis –an integrated child protection services and facilities centre.

Al Marri stressed the importance of qualifying more human cadres specialized in given fields to efficiently deal with all abuse cases. He also issued directives to upgrade methods of dealing with labourers’ problems. In line with the ‘Human Rights Avenue’ project, he ordered that the General Directorate’s reception and waiting halls allocated for guests and clients be turned into oases of happiness, optimism and positivity.
