Over 1,000 Syrians return home from Jordan, Lebanon over past 24 hours

More than 1,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their home country from neighboring Jordan and Lebanon over the past 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry's Center for Reconciliation of Opposing Sides and RefugeeMigration Monitoring said on Sunday.

"Over the past day, 1,079 refugees returned to the SyrianArab Republic from the territories of foreign states, including 348 people (105 women, 178 children) fromLebanon via the Jaydet-Yabus and Talkalakh checkpoints and 731 people (219 women, 373 children) from Jordan via the Nassib checkpoint," the center said in its bulletin.

The center also stressed that 16 internally displaced persons made it back to their places of permanent residence.

Meanwhile, Syrian engineering units removed mines from 1.7 hectares (4.2 acres) of land in the provinces of Damascus and Daraa, destroying 26 explosive devices, the center said.

Lebanon and Jordan are the most popular destinations for Syrian refugees, as well as Turkey and Iraq. According to the UN data, Jordan has welcomed more than 660,000 Syrians as of April 9, 2019, and Lebanon has hosted almost 1 million as of March 31, 2019. However, the situation is changing, with 204,353 having returned to Syria from foreign states since July 18, 2018, RussianDefense Ministry said. In addition, 1,712,264 Syrian refugees in 10 foreign states have expressed their wish to return back home.

The Syrian military conflict started in 2011, causing massive out-migration. According to United Nations High Commissioner's for Refugees data, there are 6,659,752 Syrians registered as refugeesseeking asylum in 45 countries all over the world as of April 1, 2019.
