Bangladesh paid $945 million in interest against the foreign debt in 2018
Bangladesh has received some $15 billion in remittance in the first 11 months of the outgoing FY2018-19, according to statistics placed by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in parliament.
"The amount of remittance sent by expatriate Bangladeshis till May of the current fiscal year (2018-19) is $15,059 million, which is $1,462 million higher than the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year," he said on Saturday.
The finance minister placed the data while replying to a question from treasury bench member Md Anwarul Azim Anar of Jhenaidah 4 constituency.
In reply to another question from Awami League lawmaker Md Faridul Haque Khan of Jamalpur 2 constituency, Kamal said, Bangladesh received a total of $5.213 billion (disbursement) from development partners, and agencies, till May of the current fiscal year, against different projects.
Of the amount, $4,974.49 million was received as a loan, while the remaining $238.90 million came as donations, Kamal said.
Replying to a scripted question from the ruling party MP Habiba Rahman Khan (Reserved seat), the finance minister said, Bangladesh has foreign debt liability amounting to $55.16 billion (according to the data of December 2018).
Bangladesh had to pay $945 million in interest against the foreign debt in 2018, he added.
