Denmark donates $39 million a year for Syrian refugees in Lebanon

Denmark's new ambassador to Lebanon Merete Juhl said on Saturday that her country donates 39 million U.S. dollars yearly to Lebanon for hosting Syrian refugees, local media reported.

"Denmark is one of the countries that have offered support for Lebanon and Jordan, in coordination with the United Nations or Danish institutions, since the start of the Syria crisis," Juhl was quoted as saying by Elnashra, an online independent newspaper.

Juhl added that during her visit to Baalbek, she visited a lot of communities hosting Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

More than 1 million Syrian refugees are registered with the the United Nations Higher Commission of Refugees in Lebanon, while the Lebanese government estimated the true number of Syrians in the country at 1.5 million.

The flow of Syrian refugees to Lebanon has weighed heavily on the country's economy and infrastructure, prompting President Michel Aoun to warn the international community that Lebanon will be sending refugees to Europe if it does not facilitate the return of refugees to Syria.
