Dominican Republic deports more than 8,000 illegal migrants

Santo Domingo, Mar 23 (Prensa Latina) The General Headquarters of Migration (DGM) of the Dominican Republic informed that 8,383 irregular foreigners were deported up to today in the period between January and March of this year.

These persons were arrested in 285 operations in different points of the country from the beginning of the present year, until date, by disposition of the general director of the institution, retired general lieutenant Máximo William Muñoz Delgado.

The group is composed by undocumented nationals of 14 countries: Albania, Armenia, Cuba, France, Haiti, India, Iran, Panama, Puerto Rico, Peru, Panama, Syria, Colombia and Venezuela.

Most of the illegal migrants come from Haiti, Venezuela, Colombia and Cuba, and they were deported in coordination with the embassies of their respective nations, added the report of the DGM.

Previously, between August and December 2016, 123 illegal foreign citizens were repatriated by the international airport of The Americas and 13, 541 for the terrestrial route on the Dominican - Haitian border, he added.

On having presented his report, Muñoz made sure that since he is at the head of the DGM, started on August 16, 2016, there has been a whole of 23,047 illegal migrants deported.

He warned that there will be a firm control of the entry and exit of foreigners on the Dominican territory, thinking that the migratory movement must be harmonized with the needs for the national development.

He exhorted foreigners who want to remain in the country, to come to the DGM to normalize its demurrage and to be provided with the necessary documents.
