The Iraqi Ministry of Displacement and Migration (MoDM) on Saturday revealed the latest number of displaced people from Mosul as the military operation to retake the city enters its sixth month.
In a statement, the MoDM announced since the start of the operation against the Islamic State (IS) in Mosul, nearly 500,000 people have been displaced.
Out of the half million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the city, 320,000 of them originated from west Mosul.
According to the MoDM, nearly 100,000 of the IDPs from west Mosul have arrived in Erbil Province at the Khazir, Hassansham, Chamakor, and Debaga camps.
Fifteen thousand others have settled at the Nergizli and Qaymawa camps in Duhok Province.
The statement added 180,000 additional IDPs were now settled in the camps of Jada’a, Haj Ali, and Hamam Alil in the Qayyarah area in southern Mosul.
The MoDM stated displacements would persist as the military operation to liberate other areas of the western side of Mosul continued.
The commander of the Iraqi Federal Police, Lieutenant General Rayid Shakir, announced the Federal Police and Rapid Response Forces had closed in on IS insurgents.
He stated the police advanced 200 meters toward Mosul’s old city and seized control over the areas near the Hadba’a minaret and al-Nuri mosque, where IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared a caliphate in 2014.
According to the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Joint Crisis Coordination Centre, nearly 170,000 IDPs from Mosul have resorted to camps in the Region since the latest military campaign in Mosul began on Oct. 17.
